Explore TMS at California Holistic Health
A non-invasive, advanced option designed to gently guide the brain toward healthier activity patterns—and help you feel like yourself again.
When depression or OCD won’t let up, it can start to feel personal—like you’re “failing” treatment. You’re not. Sometimes the brain simply needs a different kind of support.
That’s where Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) comes in: a non-invasive brain stimulation therapy that uses magnetic fields to activate specific brain networks involved in mood and behavior.
What is TMS (and what it’s not)
TMS uses an electromagnetic coil placed against the scalp to deliver repeated magnetic pulses that stimulate targeted brain regions.
TMS is not:
-
Surgery (no cutting, no implants)
-
Anesthesia (you stay awake)
-
ECT (it’s a different treatment approach; TMS does not require anesthesia and is targeted to specific sites)
Who TMS may help
TMS is commonly used when symptoms continue despite standard treatments. For example, depression that hasn’t improved enough with medication and/or therapy is a well-known use.
It is also FDA-cleared for additional indications, including OCD, and (depending on protocol/device) conditions such as migraine and smoking dependence.
If you’re unsure whether you “qualify,” that’s exactly what a consultation is for—we’ll review your history, symptoms, and goals and guide you to the most appropriate next step.
What a TMS session feels like
Most people describe it as a tapping or knocking sensation on the head during pulses.
Sessions are typically brief—often a few minutes up to about 40 minutes, depending on the protocol.
A typical course is daily sessions (5 days/week) for about 4–6 weeks, though accelerated approaches exist in some settings.
Safety and side effects: what to know
TMS is generally considered safe and well-tolerated, but side effects can happen.
Common side effects may include:
-
scalp discomfort
-
headache
-
facial muscle tingling/twitching
-
lightheadedness
Serious side effects are rare, but can include seizures, mood elevation/mania (especially in bipolar disorder), and hearing issues if hearing protection isn’t used.
Our approach: TMS as part of whole-person care
At California Holistic Health, we don’t separate mind from body. We treat TMS as one powerful tool in an integrated plan—because sleep, stress, routine, nutrition, and nervous system regulation influence energy, motivation, and recovery.
Here’s how we make TMS feel clear, supported, and realistic:
1) Thoughtful screening + a personalized plan
We start by understanding your symptoms, treatment history, and daily life—so your plan fits your schedule (not the other way around).
2) Clear expectations (no hype, no pressure)
We explain what TMS is, what it typically feels like, and how progress is often measured over time—so you can make an informed decision.
3) Whole-person support alongside TMS
We help you build support around treatment (sleep rhythm, stress tools, simple routines), because the goal is not only symptom relief—it’s sustainable functioning.
4) Progress tracking beyond “better or worse”
We track meaningful changes like energy, sleep quality, consistency, and day-to-day functioning—so you can see momentum even before you feel “100%.”
5) Respectful, private, shame-free care
We know how vulnerable it can feel to ask for help. Our care stays compassionate, confidential, and judgment-free.
